Notes from the beat battle last night
- Luckily, I didn't embarrass myself
- A lot of times, it boils down to what are the judges looking for - in this case i had two a&r's and three producers (all of which who are trying to get the sample free/pop/r&b money right now) - needless to say they wanted to hear what was "currently hot"
- Ended up finishing 3rd, a little disappointing but what can you do?
On a side note, I discovered that there are stages to accepting a beat battle loss, much like grieving:
1) Shock
2) Anger
3) Bitterness/Hating
4) Acceptance
5) After sleeping on it, back to being a hater but being ok with it

Major labels just don't get it
I probably shouldn't comment on this considering I'm a broke ass producer who'd love to sell a beat (not that anyone from Warner is reading this)....
One of my favorite forums just got hit with a legal threat from Warner Bros. because an "artist's" (we're not gonna name names) advance was posted in the forum by a user - an advance mind you. No tags on the advance, it appears to be the full tracklisting, etc. Just keep this in mind. So do they contact the owner of the site first? Maybe through a forum message or an email to the webmaster? No - they went to the site's webhost and threatened legal action. The artist in question is not what you'd call a platinum artist - not to say the artist isn't known or hasn't sold records in the past, but in this day and age, if the album went gold, somebody would have gotten a promotion.
So this is an artist with a healthy fanbase, a little more on the underground side, and this is an artist that isn't gonna get a lot of promotion. So on a popular forum where this thread (and other threads like it on other forums), this is one important way that the fans are actually going to find out about the project. But thats another arguement for another time.
Here's what gets me - what label is....careless enough to release an advance thats untagged and not lacking ANYTHING in 2007? Did you think it wasn't going to get bootlegged? Here's the kicker - the advance was generating good reviews! So yeah, here's a thread thats creating positive attention for the artist, doing more for promo than the label is going to do (because they don't see the artist as a big seller, and thats just how labels see it)....and they threaten legal action to the webhost?
Major labels need to get on their game and embrace reality. Shit's gonna get bootlegged, no matter if you stop the advance or not. If you release out advances with perfect quality, no tags, etc - somebody's going to rip it. You have to get in front of shit like this, reach out to the people who are going to buy the album, get their opinion on what a single should be, etc. Treat the fans like you are trying to earn their money and not entitled to it. We're way past the point of crying about album leaks and advance leaks. Make it work for you. Release acapellas and encourage fan remixes - create an active MySpace community around the artist and get people interested. I don't care what you do, just do SOMETHING different because shit like this? It ain't working.
But please, feel free to buy my beats still - I'll also accept A&R jobs, label deals, and a seat on the Board.

What is it with this beat
I just got in a track over a beat of mine thats one of my best....ever. And yet again, the track is subpar. I'm not gonna name names or post audio because I'm not tryin to embarass him, i'm just gonna say that its real real real disappointing that nobody has ripped this track like they need to. Real soulful beat, great chorus, shouldn't be a problem right? I think its almost payback or something because I love the beat THAT much, so now I gotta keep waiting and waiting for somebody to use it right.

New beat (by request)
So a little more than a year ago, I was in the iStandard Producer Showcase down in NY - this was the first time I ever really presented my beats out to the public so naturally I was nervous. I was working on tracks right up until I left for the train pretty much, and the night before I made a beat that for some reason, I just loved. Well fast forward to the showcase, I played the beat, and people made the 'ehhhhhhhh' face - all the other beats were well received except for this one. So long story short, ever since that night, I've HATED that beat.
So the other night demic asks me to to do something with that same sample. I had purposefully stayed away from it but I figured what the hell. The new beat came out much, much better and I feel like I've exercised a demon or something LOL. So long story short, here's the new beat...

Song I produced for epideMIC+ a quick word on how frequently I'll be updating
Okay so I'm guessing like 3 people tops have read this blog so far, and i've gotten feedback from two people - one liked it, the other gave the thumbs down. Fuck it. LOL. For today and yesterday the updates were music but that won't always be the case - some days it'll be a beat, some days it'll be an update on what mixtape we're releasing that week, some days it might be me talking about how I didn't make a beat that day. *shrugs*
Okay on to today's update. Here's the story behind this song: epideMIC was looking for a beat to speak on his daughter, he sent me the sample and gave me an idea of what he was looking for. I gave him a rough draft, he wrote to it, I finished up the beat and that was it. Demic and I can knock a song out real quick, and we're doing this all over AIM!

Sometimes when you sit down to make a beat you struggle with it, you struggle to figure out what you're trying to say, what you wanna sample (or compose) - and sometimes, that shit is just instant. This beat was INSTANT. This beat is in response to some dumb shit in my life that I took responsibility for, and how I was feeling (basically like an asshole) at the time .

Why I'm Blogging
Before I can really get into this blogging shit, I felt I needed to explain exactly what I'm trying to accomplish and introduce myself. Some of you know me as Dave, some of you know me as Doc, but what you call me doesn't matter as long as you listen to the music. I deal with shit in life by making beats, and they'll often reflect that - if i'm crazy in love (no Beyonce pun intended), you'll hear some romantic samples and some shit that'll make you smile - it'll be sappy, it'll be practically untouchable for a traditional rapper to use, but fuck it - thats what i'm making! If i'm pissed off, you're gonna get some dark angry shit. Some people write when they need to express their feelings - I just make beats.
